His visual iconography consists of images of candy-coloured cartoon-like characters – smiling flowers, colourful mushrooms and creatures with bulging eyes popping out at the viewer to cause an overflow of colours and cuteness. Murakami works consistently with the repetition of the same or similar patterns and symbols, all exploring the links between traditional printmaking techniques and Japanese anime and manga. We conclude our list with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, the proponent of the innovative “Superflat” aesthetic, which combines classical Japanese art with contemporary Japanese pop culture. Kusama successfully merges her own inner world with the outside world as her impressive, whimsical sculptures filled with her dots can be found all over the world. The dots first came to her at age 10, when she had hallucinations in which she saw light flashes, fields of dots and auras. No matter the medium in which she creates, be it painting or sculpture, Kusama always continued to use the same motif: endless dots. I forgot about myself as they enveloped me.” This idea of infinity through repetitive patterns has been fundamental for Kusama’s further artistic production. In her words: “I would cover a canvas with nets, then continue painting them on the table, on the floor, and finally on my own body. She started developing her groundbreaking visual language in the 1950s with her Infinity Net paintings – made entirely from repetitive semi-circular brushstrokes creating lace-like patterns that cover the canvas and suggest an expansion into infinity. Yayoi Kusama is one of the most famous pattern artists alive today. Hundreds of identical turquoise blue triangles are set against a red background, and by rotating individual triangles, Albers energised the composition and revealed various red shapes. In one of her serigraphs, Untitled (1969), we see a hard-edged geometric composition characteristic of her prints. After 40 years of creating her iconic woven works, Albers started printmaking in 1963, just when the Op and Pop Art movements were in prominence. In both her textiles and her prints, she created intricately patterned, complex compositions built upon geometric motifs and repeated elements. Albers worked with striking geometric patterns and bold colours, helping to pioneer the Modernist movement.Īlbers’s revolutionary “pictorial weavings” were influenced by Pre-Columbian art and textiles, which she studied during her trips to Mexico in the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Berlin in 1899, Anni Albers received her education at the Bauhaus in Weimar, before moving to the United States where she started to create mass-producible fabric patterns.

You can then add individual tracks and releases to this playlist from any Tidal interface, and all tracks added will automatically sync offline on the mobile app. One way to improve the experience across all the interfaces is to create a playlist, which you then set to offline. The desktop experience isn’t quite so simple, as offline is only available on mobile. You can easily download albums and singles to offline on the Tidal mobile app by toggling the offline button at the top of the release page. 'Offline mode' can be also be selected in the mobile app settings to make only downloaded music available. Be sure to check the download audio quality settings before you start saving tracks (refer to point 10 above). This means if you’re out of network range (on the London tube, say), are abroad and don't have data, or simply want to save your phone data, you still have some tracks saved to your device. You can 'download' music to play offline, when you have no internet connection, on the mobile app. Tidal does have built-in support for offline playback and downloads for mobile, though. Head to the Tidal store to find a surprisingly large number of albums available to download in MP3 and FLAC formats, from Daft Punk to Prince to Radiohead. Yes, you can – but unfortunately not natively (wouldn't that be nice?) You'll need a tool like AudKit to convert Tidal streams to downloadable hard files on your PC or Mac so you can listen offline.Īlternatively, you can buy music through Tidal. You will need to download the Tidal desktop client in order to stream over AirPlay.Ĭan you download Tidal music to your computer? Struggling with AirPlay on Tidal's web player? There's a reason for that: it can't be done. Streaming in hi-fi quality as opposed to the standard setting will use more of your mobile data, so you could opt to only stream at top quality when you’re connected to wi-fi. On the iOS and Android Tidal apps, you can also adjust your streaming audio quality according to whether you're connected to wi-fi or 3G/4G/5G. Note that all Masters tracks have an 'M' logo next to them. We've also suggested some of the best Tidal Masters albums on the service – a good place to start if you don't mind us saying so. You can also search for them via the search bar, or find a dedicated Tidal Masters page within 'Explore'. Tidal has recently introduced ‘Master Edition’ Artist Radio and Track Radio, too, allowing subscribers to listen to an uninterrupted stream of Tidal Masters tracks based on their listening habits. As long as you're a £20/$20 per month subscriber, and have selected 'HiFi/Master', you will benefit from the hi-res streams where available.īut how to find that crystal clear high-resolution goodness? Scroll down the Home screen and you'll find a suggestion of Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) Tidal Masters albums and playlists, of which there are many. Tidal Masters, as they're called, are available via the Tidal desktop, iOS and Android apps, but not on web browser (yet). Apparently millions of them, and the largest collection of MQA tracks outside of China. On mobile it’s ‘settings’ and then ‘quality’ to adjust the quality of streaming and downloads based on your wi-fi/cellular status (see point 9 and 10.).Īnd yes, Tidal has hi-res audio streams thanks to MQA technology. On the desktop app, select ‘settings’ then ‘streaming’ and choose 'HiFi/Master'. If you have signed up to the HiFi Plus quality subscription then make sure that you get the benefit of that better sound quality. And in Australia, that's AU$18 and AU$36. In the UK, the Family HiFi (lossless) and HiFi Plus (hi-res) services offer streaming for up to six people for £15 or £30 respectively. This allows you to add extra people to your account, but for half the normal cost. Just like those services, it offers a £10/$10/AU$12-per-month Tidal HiFi tier that offers CD-quality ('lossless') streams instead.Īnother way to keep the cost down is by signing up to one of Tidal's two Family Plans. While the best sound quality (high-resolution, up to 9216 kbps) and accessibility to Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio tracks are exclusive to the Tidal HiFi Plus tier (£20/$20/AU$24 per month), Tidal doesn’t have to be more expensive than Spotify and the rest. It doesn’t have to cost £20/$20 per month Sign up at, then download the app and log into your account.ģ. Tidal passes on Apple’s 30 per cent App Store fee, meaning you will pay extra if you sign up on Tidal’s iOS app on your iPhone or iPad. If you do want to subscribe to the service, make sure you do so on the Tidal website and not directly on the iOS app. Don’t sign up through the Apple App Store I actually found an amazing embark along these lines on the Blessed Serra map that comes with the Masterwork mod. I’ve been to Oaxaca before, and as an American expat in Mexico, I’m very experienced in traveling Mexico period… but we’ll be side by side experiencing Day of the Dead in Oaxaca together. Well, since I’m going on this trip too - here’s their chance (and yours!)! Well, I can’t answer that for you - all I know is that I get a lot of messages from people who follow my blog, social media, and my overall journey over the past 6-ish years, and they say they want to meet me. While solo travel is invigorating and fulfilling, joining a group trip provides solo travelers with unique and rewarding adventure AND social opportunities when traveling - a phenomenon of which I can attest! Reason #6. Don’t wait for their calendar to open up, for them to be able to afford it, for them to change their mind, for your relationship to improve, or for that love interest to finally show up in your life… GO on your dream trip! YOU CAN, and YOU CAN NOW. Plus, one of the things I hear from my readers the most often is this: “I want to travel, but I don’t have anyone to go with.” A group tour or group trip is the perfect solution!ĭon’t wait for somebody to join you. Group travel gives you safety in numbers, combined experience and insider knowledge, a built-in opportunity for meeting new people and socialization, and a lower-stress travel experience. But why should you join my group trip instead of doing it yourself? Reason #4: It’s better to come to Oaxaca with me than to make your own arrangements. Ok, hopefully by now you want to come visit Oaxaca for Día de los Muertos. The film also received critical acclaim for its portrayal of Mexican culture and was embraced by audiences worldwide for its heartfelt storytelling and beautiful animation.Īnd while the movie takes place in a fictional Mexican town, scenes from Oaxaca served as inspiration. While “Coco” is a fictional story, it showcases the significance of Día de los Muertos and highlights the cultural traditions, music, and art associated with this celebration. Through a magical journey, Miguel finds himself in the vibrant Land of the Dead, where he encounters his ancestors and learns about the importance of family, remembrance, and following one’s passion. Reason #2: Oaxaca is the #1 place in Mexico to experience Día de los Muertos, followed by Mexico City and the island of Janitzio in Michoácan.Īnd ain’t it adorable?! The film “Coco” tells the story of a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s longstanding ban on music. Families may also place sugar skulls, known as calacas or calaveras, and traditional foods like pan de muerto (bread of the dead) on the altars. It is believed that the scent of marigolds and the essence of the offerings guide the spirits back home. The purpose is to welcome the spirits of the departed back to the earthly realm and provide them with offerings to ensure a pleasant visit.Īltars are adorned with vibrant marigold flowers, candles, photographs of the deceased, their favorite foods, and other items they enjoyed in life, and the spirit of the holiday is much more in celebration than in grief. During this time, families come together to create ofrendas (altars) in their homes and visit cemeteries to decorate the graves of their ancestors. The Day of the Dead celebration typically occurs from October 31st to November 2nd, aligning with the Catholic All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos in Spanish, is a multi-day holiday that combines indigenous traditions with Catholicism to honor and remember deceased loved ones. They do not allow anyone to step foot on the island. Additionally, the law protects anyone attempting to visit the island, as the inhabitants defend themselves to the death. Eliminating contact with the Sentinelese also prevents the spread of fatal diseases to a population that has no immunity. By disallowing off-shore fishing, the food source of the islanders is protected. The government of India has declared North Sentinel Island, including three miles extending outward, an exclusion zone. They’re capable of fishing in the nearby waters as far as they can paddle their rafts/canoes with their poles. They defend themselves with weapons such as handmade bows and arrows and spears. If they are like the other Andamanese, they eat monitor lizards, berries, pigs, and seafood that they catch in the surrounding reefs. A Little Known CultureĪs we would expect from an isolated ancient culture, the Sentinelese live a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Because they do not possess the genetic admixing that is seen when different populations of people come together, the group and their culture have presumably remained unchanged. Some DNA research suggests that they may have migrated from mainland India. Scholars still debate when the Andamanese and Sentinelese arrived and also from where. Also, Asians and Pacific populations (including the Andamanese) appear to have migrated in one wave and expansion, contrary to the earlier theory of multiple waves out of Africa. Their results show that the Andamanese (including the Sentinelese) people have an archaic human ancestor that has since gone extinct. A Possible Unknown HomininĪn interesting study was conducted recently by Mondal et al, and the results were published on June 25, 2016, in Nature Genetics. Singh was not able to conclusively determine whether or not they arrived at the same time as the rest of the Andamanese or if they were even the same group, but he did say, “The Sentinelese are the only pre-Neolithic tribe left in the world where no contact has been made” ( Harding 2001). Without DNA from the North Sentinelese, Dr. This may be due to the initial penetration of the northern coastal areas of the Indian Ocean by modern humans in the migration out of Africa about 50,000 to 70,000 years ago” ( Menon 2012). “The Centre’s study has suggested that two ancient maternal lineages have evolved in the Andaman Islands in genetic isolation independently. Migrations took place to the islands at some point when water levels were lower, but when the waters rose again, the islanders became isolated. He hypothesized that during the Ice Age, a land bridge connected Myanmar to the Andaman Islands. Genetic research in the early 2000s by Lalji Singh, director of India’s Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, showed that the Jarawa and Onge had genetic differences from each other that indicate either different migrations out of Africa or different origins altogether. What Does Genetic Work Tell Us? Different Evolutionary Lineages Because DNA results differ and there are conflicting theories about their migration, the true origin and relationship of the Andamanese people are murky. While I feel lost and confused, I’m also mesmerized by the unusual situation my character has the misfortune of finding themselves in.Īesthetically, the first thing Scorn reminded me of wasn’t one of the game’s primary influences, Swiss artist H.R. Searching for new things to interact with that may help me progress, I go back and forth through assorted map areas full of phallic architecture and machines designed for appendage insertion. Everything is quiet save for the disquieting squelching sounds I’m treated to whenever my character sticks their hand, fist, or fingers into a lever or machine to activate it. Wandering through dark, labyrinthine halls in an alien world full of strange technology, I search for any sign or clue that might help me solve the latest puzzle I find myself stuck on. Tentacles squelching wetly © Ebb Software Playing Scorn felt akin to enduring a 10-hour Hellraiser-like torture session, which is a shame because the game’s aesthetic and creative ideas are certainly commendable. Not just in terms of figuring out the game's puzzles, but also in regards to dealing with its clunky, woefully inefficient combat and frustrating checkpoint system. Scorn is so difficult, it can feel almost impossible to get through on your own at times. Unfortunately, the sheer lack of reward for solving these puzzles (outside of the relief that they’re finally done) results in the game feeling distinctly unpleasant and unlikeable throughout much of the experience. It attempts to make up for this with feelings of dread born from its empty, confusing corridors, unforgiving difficulty, and incomprehensible puzzles. Scorn isn’t your typical horror game, offering little to nothing in the way of traditional scares. |
